Rocky Mountains
The beautiful snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains stretch all the way south from Canada into Colorado and beyond. In winter, there is fantastic skiing here and in summer, it’s the best place to go hiking and hang out with the mountain goats. It’s worth staying after dark to see the stars on display. Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs is just a one-hour drive from Denver and is right at the foot of Pikes Peak. It’s a great spot for hiking and there are some amazing trails in this area. The town was one of the first destination resorts in the country and today visitors come from around the world to climb Pikes Peak and explore the stunning sandstone spires at the Garden of the Gods. In the city, there are a handful of museums, which are perfect for rainy days.
Great Sand Dunes
Head south with your car rental and you’ll soon hit Great Sand Dunes National Park. This place is incredible with 650-foot sand dunes! This is Colorado’s youngest and quietest park but by far one of the most magical. Bring the kids along and challenge them to a race up the dunes and down again, through this sea of sand. It’s easy enough to imagine that you’ve been transported to the Sahara! Arrive at the end of the day to take in the dancing; shifting shadows the sun casts on the dunes. It’s pure magic.
