Rent a car in Minneapolis

Where to rent a car in Minneapolis

What’s fantastic about Minneapolis is that it really is an all-year-round destination. Throughout the winter months the enclosed glass skyway network makes your visit much more bearable as it protects you from the harsh weather in a beautifully climate controlled haven.

Minneapolis has many happenin’ scenes to choose from, it hosts many fantastic rock clubs, edgy theaters, organic eateries and cultural art museums. With more than thirty theaters in the city, the theater scene is thriving; you must make time to see a show and enjoy dinner and live jazz at one of the many wonderful restaurants to choose from.

When your flight lands at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) you can rent a car straight from the airport to explore the Land of Lakes at your own leisure. Choose from Alamo, Avis, Dollar, Hertz, National, Payless and Thrifty which all have counters at MSP. You can also pick up your rental car from downtown but remember the prices can differ from location to location even if it’s the same company, so it’s best to use a travel search engine such as liligo.com to search for the cheapest car rental princes in Minneapolis.

Driving in: Minneapolis; what you need to know

Getting around the Twin Cities is easiest with a rental car, it gives you full freedom to explore everything at your own leisure and enables you to reach the farthest activities. If possible, avoid rush hour, it will ease the tension of driving (especially in bad weather.) Parking is ample, with both street parking (metered) and parking garages being easy to find downtown. Be cautious of the one-way streets, there’s plenty of them and they seem to appear out of nowhere if you’re not familiar with the roads.

If you’re visiting in the winter months, a four-wheel car rental will be a blessing in the snow. In bad weather be aware of black ice and drive more slowly. In addition, make sure you leave more than enough space between yourself and the car in front of you.

Road trips from Minneapolis

Lutsen

Lutsen mountain resort is the largest ski resort in the Midwest and is a family-run ski area with over 60 years history. Of course, this would be the perfect destination for the thrill seekers and pro skiers out there, and the scenic views you will see on the way down the slopes are an added bonus – they are truly fantastic.

But don’t worry if you’re not an adventurer you can still enjoy an exciting day at the mountain hiking, exploring, hot tub relaxing, eating, listening to live music or all of the above.

Schell’s Brewery

If you’re partial to a beer or six then you’ll want to visit the second oldest family-run brewery in the whole of US and, not surprisingly, it makes one heck of a brew. There is a real focus on German beer, as that is where its heritage lies, as of 2013 Schell has crafter over 100 different types of German-inspired brews. You can take a tour and check out their museum of brewing to learn more about the local beer history, of course you are able to try samples as you go along because what would a beer tour be without any samples? Madness! So make sure you play rock, paper, and scissors to decide who will be designated driver for this road trip.

Afton State Park

Only a short distance from the city (30 miles), it seems silly to pass this one by. Grand oaks and delicate prairie flowers grace the extensive landscape of this park. Trek through the expanse of native and restored prairie lands, magical oak forests and sandy scenic beaches. Although it’s not far from the twin cities, it’s absolutely worth staying the night at one of the quaint inns, book a hotel nearby Stillwater and take a break from hiking at Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque and Pirate Bar for a rest bite.
